    When Ted talks--I listen. I think what made these parts so good is that there's a simple authority to them. They lay rock solid, inside the groove without cluttering things up. Thanks for the insight into one of Prince's many talents...a true groove-master.

    Ya’ll are missing the obvious. What about the bass line to “When Doves Cry”? Wait a minute, there is no bass line in that song. EXACTLY! That, to me, is the mark of a true musical genius: knowing when to play…and when not to…or even knowing when not to record a bass line at all. That shows restraint. Restraint is the hallmark of a mature and accomplished musician. And musicians of that caliber serve the song. Brilliant!

    Princes genius is in the presentation. He's a master performer and showman. He also did some clever innovative stuff regarding recording. But as for his bass playing -- it's hardly anything special. And those parts are pretty pedestrian. IMO. Versatile? Can you give me an example of him playing jazz?

      F*cking great comment. I love the use of the word “pedestrian”. Yes, the madhouse records in the 80s, several non commercial recordings, the Rainbow Children might be considered “jazzy” 🤷🏾‍♂️

      @@TedTalksBass I actually prefer that album to a lot of his stuff. It's "jazz-y" but not swing with lots of changes. When I first heard the opening track I thought "DAMN! Prince is better on drums than I thought. But it wasn't him. LOL I did a version of the one track Prince did with NO bass and did ALL the parts of bass! Kind of a joke, but it's pretty cool. ua-cam.com/video/7ORinrCH7oM/v-deo.html

    One tip for people who quit bands... dont phone your bandmate 5 months later because you want to use them again after deciding to quit. If you quit, QUIT. That happens a lot in my experience, and its annoying. Fine if you want to quit, but if you regret it, tough luck.

    If you gave Flea a whole year to learn 777-9311 or Let's Work he wouldn't be able to play either song. I don't need to mention Lady Cab Driver or All The Critics Love you. Flea is lazy & always plays safe & tame lines. His thumb is trash. He has literally zero swing or shuffle in his playing. It comes off as sheet music. Frankly Flea couldn't face Mark Or even Andre Cymone...

    Only Imagery is "iconic" - i.e., a person or thing whose Image is famous. (The word Icon, in orginal Greek, MEANS Image.) In addition to being the most overused word on UA-cam, Iconic is also, by far, the most MISused - misusers seeming to believe it means simply "widely known," "instantly recognizable," etc., without sole reference to imagery. Increasingly, too, it is being employed, mistakenly, as a simple synonym of " very famous." This case of misuse has spiraled due to the UA-cam Feedback Loop - wherein video-makers parrot and propagate each other's errors. A sad consequence of such wide misuse is that certain dictionaries - as a matter of long-held policy (now in need of revision) - will update definitions to reflect vernacular usage, setting up a slippery slope towards our language's ultimate debasement.

    • @TedTalksBass
      @TedTalksBass 19 годин тому

      Wow. You had time today! Well, everyone has to play the algorithm game on some level and “iconic” is one of those words. But thanks for the food for thought.

    I love Flea, but Prince is definitely funkier, in the deep sense. And put Flea on a guitar and see how he does, so ... there's that. And I don't recall hearing Victor Wooten name one of Flea's lines possibly the funkiest of all time, like he did with the line Prince wrote and played on Let's Work. Great video. What kind of bass is that you're playing? Something that starts with an M. Looks and sounds great.

    I respect and I do like flee as a bass player but to compare flea to Prince on the base is absolute ludicrous. There is no human comparison to put between Prince and flea. Prince is absolutely a monster top five ever on the bass guitar. I'm sorry but I have to keep it real. There is absolute no merit. Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention Let's Work. Let's Work has some awesome bass work as well. But to me what made Prince an awesome instrumentalist was his ability to know what sound sounded good with every other sounds... He was like that with his vocals as well. Speeding up & slowing down vocal tracks, putting them together, & making it sound perfect together... Prime example: If I Was Your Girlfriend... You hear speed up, and slowed down tracks throughout that joint... Pure Genius! No one could do that but Prince... He simply had a knack for knowing what went together, and what didn't... Like taking the bass line out of When Doves Cry... I couldn't even imagine that having a bass line... 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

    Prince was above all a composer. Each individual thing he did served the larger concept of the work. There are times when his drumming/drum programming is the highlight and other times when it’s dirt simple, etc. I think (accept for maybe on guitar) he really didn’t care what you thought of him on any instrument. He understood that music isn’t about trying to prove how bad you are. It’s about expression.
